It is essentially a dormitory village in Lisbon, characterized by its construction of tall buildings.
Despite its long history, which dates back to the Paleolithic period, its growth began in the 16th century with the affluence of the nobility, their estates and mansions, but it was only from the 1960s that the urbanization of Santo António dos Cavaleiros gained force.
Designed by the architects Alberto Reaes Pinto, Ressano Garcia and Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, it was conceived as a garden city at the gates of Lisbon. The name of the neighborhood was inspired by Casal dos Cavaleiros, a town located between Flamenga and Ponte de Frielas.
From the 1970s onwards, as a result of cheap housing and road access to Lisbon, Santo António dos Cavaleiros attracted immigrants from various parts of Portugal and the world.
