Alvalade is a parish in the municipality of Lisbon, with an area of 5.34 km² and 31,812 inhabitants, which includes the former parishes of Alvalade, Campo Grande and São João de Brito, unified in 2012.
Until the mid-20th century, Alvalade was characterized by fields, farms and vegetable gardens, used as a leisure space for the nobility of the time. From the 1930s onwards, a process of construction of new buildings began, which would shape its current matrix.
Then came Avenida de Roma, Bairro das Estacas, Bairro de São Miguel, the Torres on Avenida dos Estados Unidos da América and, in the 1940s, the construction of Bairro de Alvalade.
For some time, Alvalade was considered a symbol of Modern Lisbon, as it is a relatively modern neighborhood, designed by a group of architects, who shared 8 projects with their own architectural identity.
Characterized by wide streets and tall buildings, similar to Avenidas Novas, it soon attracted the middle class, which gave it life and made it known as an "elite neighborhood".
In the parish of Alvalade are located some of the largest and most prestigious Universities in the country. The highlight goes to the University City of the University of Lisbon, the largest university in the country, the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE), the Portuguese Catholic University and the Lusophone University of Humanities and Technologies.
Unlike other parishes, Alvalade is not laden with monuments and heritage, but the Solar da Quinta dos Lagares d'El-Rei stands out.
