Once the seat of a parish, today Carnaxide belongs to the new Union of Parishes of Carnaxide e Queijas. Carnaxide has distinguished itself in recent years as a magnet for new residential and service projects. Its initial vocation as a dormitory location, due to its proximity to Lisbon, was neglected due to the development registered in the last two decades.

The name of Carnaxide comes from the Arabic language: "carna-axide", which means " mount of red earth ", or in the Celtic "carn-achad" ( land of loose stones ). This is one of the places in Oeiras with the oldest history of occupation. Celts and Arabs, have passed through here and left traces of their occupation. Visiting place for nobles and poets, including King Pedro V, in terms of historical documentary records Carnaxide dates back to the 12th century .

In addition to its housing vocation, as a dormitory location in Lisbon, Carnaxide has a large number of large companies such as EFACEC, Sumol or Mota-Engil, several business parks, industrial spaces, small and large commerce.It shares with Amadora one of the main shopping areas in Lisbon, with several shopping centers such as Alegro (shopping centre), IKEA, Decathlon, Makro, Norauto, Seaside Center, Media Markt, Moviflor, Continente, Jumbo, Tartaruga Imobiliária etc.

Recently, new urban projects have brought a dynamic of growth to Carnaxide, namely:

Cinco District - A real estate complex dedicated to the service sector, it has a tower 80 meters high and 20 floors and two other office buildings, a Marriott Group hotel, gardens (indoor and outdoor) and a square for hosting events, a total investment of 80 million euros.

World Trade Center - The project, currently under construction, includes three buildings with offices, a hotel, auditorium and commercial spaces, thanks to a total investment of €120 million;

Aquaterra Masterplan - Currently in the Project and Study phase by the Municipality of Oeiras (January 2021), this complex is an entertainment infrastructure with more than 18 hectares, comprising an integrated offer of sports, green areas and quality commerce that it will act as a new attraction and experience pole for outer space at the level of the northern area of Carnaxide.

Sky City - A development in the mountains of Carnaxide, which will include 49 detached houses, 66 townhouses and 255 apartments, under the responsibility of the JPS Group.

Alto da Montanha - A subdivision under construction, which encompasses several real estate projects, with emphasis on the Dream Living by the JPS Group, an investment of 45 million euros, comprising 90 apartments.
