Paço de Arcos

Paço de Arcos belongs to the parishes of Oeiras and São Julião da Barra, Paço de Arcos and Caxias. Its privileged location next to the beaches, on the Costa do Sol between Lisbon and Cascais, the historical heritage, the architecture, the tourist offer and the proximity to the train line, make this a very attractive town to live and visit.

The town's name comes from the Palácio dos Arcos (built in the 15th century and today transformed into a luxury hotel) and the name given to it by the people: the "Paço", thanks to the fact that El-Rei D. Manuel I and his daughter D. Maria often stayed in this palace, to watch the ships leave for India. During the Age of Discoveries, the Fort of São Pedro de Paço de Arcos was built, a landmark monument on the Oeras coastline. In other times Paço de Arcos was also known for its quarries and lime kilns.

For centuries, this village was frequented by the Portuguese nobility and bourgeoisie, attracted by the resort's holiday and bathing characteristics.

With the arrival of the railway, the Lisbon-Cascais line and the Paço de Arcos train station (1889) gave a new impulse to the town's growth. In 1940, the construction of Avenida Marginal, which links Lisbon to Cascais, next to the beaches and the sea, allowed more Lisboners to come to its beaches and accelerated the development of the locality.

In 1972, the Infante D. Henrique Nautical School was inaugurated, which brought even more notoriety to Paço de Arcos.

Today, Paço de Arcos is a town that bases its growth on the business, tourist and residential component. Several companies have settled here: HP, Procter & Gamble, Merck Sharp & Dohme (in the Office Park Quinta da Fonte), the headquarters of Grupo Impresa (SIC, Expresso, Caras, Visão, etc.) and the headquarters of NetJets Europe.

The Hotel Real de Oeiras, the Hotel Solar Palmeiras and the Hotel Vila Galé Collection Palácio dos Arcos represent a landmark in the tourist offer of the municipality of Oeiras. With the recovery of urban space and beaches, the proximity of Parque dos Poetas and the offer of quality restaurants, Paço de Arcos is today one of the main tourist attractions in the Cascais Line.
