Reguengos de Monsaraz is a friendly Alentejo city, located in the District of Évora, and which has 7,261 inhabitants. Once a village, founded in 1840, its origins date back to the prehistoric period, of which there are records of Castro who occupied the area of the current citadel and the castle.
Its geographical position, located on a hill erected on the banks of the Guadiana, attracted several peoples who were occupying it for strategic and military defense reasons. Visigoths, Arabs, Mozarabians and Jews passed through here, leaving various historical marks. Its name probably originated, during the Arab occupation, in Monte Xarez or Monte Xaraz, where Xarez or Xerez was equivalent to the Arabic form Saris or Sharish.
Reguengos de Monsaraz stands out for its vast offer in terms of high quality rural tourism (namely, residential tourism), due to its proximity to the River Guadiana and Albufeira de Alqueva. The county's wine offer is also one of the reasons responsible for attracting tourists and visitors, having been distinguished in 2015 as the European City of Wine. Restaurants, nightlife, security and hospitality are also brands that continue to attract more and more inhabitants who come from all over the place.
