São Domingos de Rana is one of the four parishes belonging to the Municipality of Cascais, it has an area of about 20 km2 and 59,248 inhabitants (2021 census). Among the main towns in the parish of São Domingos de Rana, there are:
Vault, Arneiro, Caparide, Cassanito, Conceição da Vault, Cabeço de Mouro, Madorna, Manique de Baixo, Matos Cheirinhos, Matarraque, Murtal, Outeiro de Polima, Penedo, Polima, Rana, Rebelva, São Domingos de Rena, Talaíde, Tires, Trajouce and Zambujal .
With a history dating back to the Paleolithic, this region was occupied throughout the Neolithic/Chalcolithic, Bronze/Iron, Roman and Visigothic periods, but it is from the Medieval era that there are documentary records of its occupation.
Until about 50 years ago, its territory was almost entirely exploited by agricultural and pastoral activities, namely through the cultivation of wheat, corn and vegetables and vines. But its greatest wealth came from the extraction of ashlar stone, which is abundant in this area. It was also the second area with the highest industrial concentration, namely in Abóboda.
From the 1980s onwards, São Domingos de Rana witnessed urban growth, much of which was stimulated by the expansion of the A5 Motorway, which connects Lisbon to Cascais. This growth has not always followed urban planning, which is reflected in some neighborhoods where architectural coherence leaves a little to be desired. However, the municipality of Cascais has made a notable effort in recent times in terms of facilities and leisure areas, in order to enhance the neighborhood experience and improve the quality of life of its populations.
From the real estate point of view, São Domingos de Rana has seen a growing expansion of investment in the construction of new apartments and villas, which are increasingly extending to areas with greater availability of land, namely in the Abóbada area.
