Colégio Marista de Carcavelos is part of the Global Network of Marist Schools, a project of the General Council of the Institute of Marist Brothers that aims to connect more than 600 Marist schools from 80 countries on 5 continents.
The project for a school with better conditions came to fruition in Carcavelos, in a privileged area on the Estoril line. The choice of location, influenced by the demand for boarding schools in areas experiencing demographic growth, had the support of private and public entities. The area, initially rural, was progressively urbanized due to the national demographic increase, the movement of people from the city to the outskirts and the rural exodus driven by industrialization.
Located on a vast plot of land and with several buildings designed for different learning cycles, the school has various equipment to offer the most complete teaching experience possible:

The Marist Brothers founded their first school in Portugal in October 1947 , on Rua da Estrela, in Lisbon, initially called Colégio Champagnat and, later, Externato Champagnat. It started with about 30 students, growing to two hundred three years later. In 1950, they opened a boarding school in Quinta de Vila Formosa, next to the airport, called Colégio Champagnat, with a dozen boarding students and 10 external students. This number quickly increased, leading to the search for a larger space that would satisfy the students' pedagogical and experiential needs.
On October 8, 1965, Colégio Marista de Carcavelos became a reality . On October 23, 1969, by ministerial order, a permit was granted to the Marist Congregation for the operation of a private educational establishment, called Colégio Marista de Carcavelos, with a maximum capacity of 768 students, including 240 boarders. Initially, the school welcomed only male students. It was in the 1971/72 academic year that it opened its doors to women.
The lack of public schools in the area, worsened after the 25th of April, led to the signing of an agreement to cede around two thirds of the school's facilities to the newly created Escola Secundária de Carcavelos, a situation that lasted from 1978 to 1986. After the With the full recovery of its facilities, the school has expanded significantly and currently has more than 1,600 students, on a parallel pedagogical basis.
Marcellin Champagnat, born on May 20, 1789 in Marlhes, France, was the ninth child of a Christian family. Inspired by his deep faith and devotion to Mary, he followed the priestly path, being ordained on July 22, 1816. He founded the Congregation of the Little Brothers of Mary (Marist Brothers) on January 2, 1817 in La Valla.
Despite difficulties and initial skepticism, its mission prospered, focusing on the education and catechesis of young people, especially in rural areas. Marcellin died on June 6, 1840, and was canonized in 1999 by Pope John Paul II, leaving a legacy of dedication to education and love for children.
