Algés

The village of Algés, belonging to the municipality of Oeiras, is a town whose name probably derives from the Arab influence that dates back to the time when they occupied the Iberian peninsula. With a population density of around 22,000 habitants, it is very popular to live, either because of its proximity to Lisbon or because of its privileged location in front of the Tagus River.

This is one of the places in Oeiras with the greatest growth potential in the coming years, thanks to the requalification and real estate projects that are planned. From the Vale do Jamor, passing through the City of Football, to the projects of requalifying the space where the Bullring once existed, Algés is a future-oriented town.

Points of interest

  • Palácio Anjos - This palace, built in the 19th century, is located in downtown Algés by the river and was once the leisure residence of Policarpo Anjos, a wealthy merchant. It is recovered and open to the public, has a pleasant garden and restaurant service. Here you can visit the Art Center - Manuel de Brito Collection, a collection that contains important Portuguese works of contemporary art, which were collected by the Manuel de Brito family.
  • Ribamar Palace - It is an 18th century building, built by the Count of Vimioso. It has a history linked to the nobility, which has passed through successive generations here, and was eventually bought and recovered by the Oeiras City Council. The Municipal Library of Algés, the Oeiras Dance Center, the tourist office and the Municipal Gallery of Palácio Ribamar are currently installed in this location.
  • Cruzeiro de Algés - One of the most emblematic symbols of Algés, this large stone cross was built in 1605, in the middle of the Philippine dynasty, and was semi-destroyed by a storm. The Count of Cabral repaired it with bronze cats, which can still be seen today. On its pedestal there is a Latin inscription: "Here is the Cross of the Lord. Flee disaffected people.
